Canterbury Basketball Association is proud to announce the appointment of Phil Burns as Head Coach and Nathan “Nate” Hyde, as Assistant Coach of the Men’s Tupu League team.

Phil Burns, a key figure in the Canterbury and New Zealand basketball community for over 40 years, has recently coached St Margaret’s to a successful 2023 National Tournament campaign and currently coaches St Andrew’s, echoing his multiple national titles during his 1990s tenure at Girls’ High and 1997 national final coaching Rangiora Boys’ High. Phil has also head coached the Canterbury Wildcats and assistant coached the Canterbury Rams.

Phil will be flanked by Nathan Hyde, former Canterbury Rams’ captain, who brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to his role as assistant coach. Hyde’s distinguished playing career has progressed into coaching, recently leading multiple North Canterbury representative teams.

This is the inaugural season of the Tupu League; a regionally focused basketball league designed to encourage players to continue competing for their associations after finishing representative basketball. It provides a competitive platform that bridges the gap between U20 Nationals and the NBL/Tauihi leagues. It provides high level players a opportunity to compete on the national stage.

The trials for the Men’s Tupu League team will take place on:

  • Wednesday, September 4th, and Friday, September 6th in the evening.
    • Venue: St Andrew’s College
    • Players can register here before the deadline of Friday August 30th
  • Practices will be held at the same day and time as trials.
  • The team will compete in the qualifying tournament on October 26-27 at MainPower Stadium in Rangiora.
  • If successful, the team will advance to the National Tournament, held from November 14-16 in Dunedin.
