Canterbury Basketball Association Style of Play
The programme is based around the CBA style of play (SOP) that is consistent from junior ranks through to senior representative teams and will prepare players for high levels of basketball.
We aim to develop well rounded players who can instinctively solve problems under pressure and have skill sets unrestricted by their size and “position.”
To do this we use the evidence backed coaching method of games based practice based on Transforming Basketball’s approach.
Our style of play is detailed below. All players and coaches should be intimately familiar with our SOP and Style of Coaching (SOC).
Offence
Over Arching Philosophy: TAKE GOLD AND SILVER SHOTS

Gold shot: Uncontested layup
Silver: Wide open, on balance kick out 3 pointer
Coaching note: We encourage ALL players to shoot the 3 pointer regardless of their percentage. Celebrate the decision, not the outcome. If encouraged to shoot quality shots, players will develop this capacity.
Bronze: On balance/contested layup, mid range or 3 pointer (we only take these late in shot clock).
Brown: Off-balance, contested or greedy shot.
How do we create Gold and Silver Shots?
We create Gold and silver medal shots by playing fast (Pace), spacing the floor (Space) and using core CBA 2 or 3 man actions to create advantages (Create).
PACE PHASE – We Play FAST
Skills and Points of Emphasis
- Bust outs dribbles and kick ahead passes (Encourage ALL players to handle the ball and pass ahead regardless of possition)
- Sprint the floor FAST and wide (space the floor)
- Attack the rim aggressively for lay ups and make the right decision to either take a GOLD shot of kick to open, well spaced teammate

SPACE PHASE
Skills and Points of Emphasis – Make all cuts, passes, drives and shots ON BALANCE.
- Spread the floor – stay outside the 3 point line – 1 in 4 out looks
- Cut hard to the hoop to create space
- Post in the charge circle (mindful of 3 seconds)
- Quick, effective ball movement move over the split line,
- Drive hard to the hoop to draw defence, kick to open player, extra passes
- All receivers low, ready to catch the ball, eyes on the rim in triple threat
- Players in constant motion using cuts and off ball screens to create space.
- Hunt Gold and Silver shots

CREATE PHASE
- Use 2 and 3 man actions/triggers to create advantages, eg (but not limited to)
- dribble hand offs,
- off ball screens (pins or drifts)
- pinch post actions,
- non stagnant pick and rolls.
DEFENSE
Over Arching Philosophy: to apply pressure and make teams uncomfortable with the ball and force them into Bronze and Brown shots.
DEFENSIVE TRANSITION – STOP THEM PLAYING WITH PACE AS THIS STOPS OPEN LAYUPS
- Jam Up – Guard the closest player to you, DO NOT run back on defence – make them exert effort to get up the court into a poor position – Focus on taking away their dominant hand
- Force opposition to box us out but do no overcommit on offensive glass and allow bust outs
- Early ball containment forcing ball handlers to pass and dribble with their left and to the left corner side of the floor as this is the hardest place to create advantages from.
- Deny kick ahead passes
GREAT, TOUGH ON BALL DEFENCE
- All players must be able to guard the ball. Great on-ball defence results is “NAPS” (Not a problem drives):
- Make players make tough catches,
- Close out to take away on balance 3,
- Take away right hand drives using chest strikes,
- Shade players to NAPs (this looks like a no-threatening weak hand drive).
SMART OFF BALL DEFENCE – All players in stance and communicating whether you are in help or on ball.
- Position yourself based on how much of a threat your man is compared to how much of a threat the ball is. Key questions:
- Can my teammate guard the ball carrier 1 on 1? Does he need my help?
- Is my player a shooting threat?
- Be a presence
- Be low, loud and fast
- Communicate early, loud and often
COMMUNICATE AND PROBLEM SOLVE TO NULLIFY ACTIONS
- Force actions to weak hand,
- Communicate incoming actions early loud and often,
- Take away players strengths,
- Do not allow advantages to be created,
- COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE
FINSH THE DEFENSIVE POSITION AFTER WE HAVE FORCED BROWN SHOTS
- Demonstrate foul discipline- no hands fouls
- Wall up end of penetration – jump second
- Create contact with our bodies and take away space
- Compete for the rebound, PERSUE THE BALL
- Win the possession game, no second chance points
