South Island Y9/10 Tournament Approved

SSNZ and BBNZ have approved the South Island Junior High School Basketball Premiership

After the disappointing news that the Y9/10 Tournament was no longer going to be part of the BBNZ calendar, we started gathering information and feedback from schools here to find out if we should fight to keep this tournament alive. Feedback from schools in the Canterbury area was overwhelmingly in favour of this, which matched the feedback from the rest of the island.

On 11 December 2024, SSNZ officially announced their acceptance of the proposal we put forward (CBA and BO, with support from the other South Island Associations, and SSC/OSSA), after having it approved by BBNZ.

Below is the official email which was sent out from School Sport New Zealand to their database:

We are thrilled to share some exciting news with you all!

Basketball New Zealand and Secondary School Sport NZ have accepted the proposal for South Island Junior Premierships to run in 2025 and beyond.  Based on feedback from South Island Associations and schools a proposal was put forward to continue this tournament.

Thank you to all the schools which contributed to the proposal we put through, it helped us not only to have a mandate to present on behalf of you all, but also to know what sort of tournament is desired for Te Wai Pounamu.

A committee will be formed to manage and oversee the Premierships, in collaboration with the host association, ensuring a successful and enjoyable tournament for all involved.

We wanted to inform you early that next year’s tournament will be held in Nelson from August 23-26, 2025. Further details and updates will be shared in the new year, but we encourage you to mark these dates in your calendars.

We look forward to working together to make this event a memorable one for our South Island secondary school students.

Should you have any questions or require more information, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
