High School 3×3 Warmup Tournament Recap

The Canterbury High School 3×3 tournament was a huge success, with the South Island Tournament coming up next

Eighteen teams descended on Pioneer Stadium this past weekend, to take part in our first ever High School 3×3 Warm-up Tournament. This tournament was structured to be an ideal precursor to the Southern Qualifiers, which are tipping off on 16 March 2024

We were also very fortunate to have international FIBA 3×3 Referee Hamish Dale lead a briefing, which covered rules and interpretations, and some strategic elements of gameplay he had picked up throughout his 3×3 career.

In addition to the 15 school teams, Lincoln University sent along three invitational teams, to help their teams prepare for the UTSNZ National Tertiary 3×3 Championship in May.

On the boys’ side, Kaiapoi High used some very timely hot shooting to grab a one-point victory over St. Thomas Red in the boys’ final, 14-13.

St. Andrew’s and Rangiora met in the girls’ final, with StAC breaking a tie-game at the five-minute mark to pull away and win 12-5.

The full results and standings from the tournament can be seen here.

Kelvin Fisher entered two teams from St. Bede’s, and thought the tournament gave his boys exactly what he desired: “collectively, our boys didn’t have a huge amount of 3×3 competition experience, so this tournament was an ideal event for them to be involved in.

“Understanding the 3×3 rule interpretation differences; trying different tactics; and building our team chemistry and cohesion – these were all valuable things we took from this event.”
