Skills Factory

CBA Skills Factory

The purpose of the CBA Skills Factory is simple: to ensure players across the Canterbury region have access to high-quality, affordable skills coaching throughout the year.

In partnership with Adam Morgan and Institute of Hoops, CBA Skills Factory provides a consistent skills development programme for both junior and senior players, helping athletes develop the technical skills, decision-making and confidence required to perform in games.

The programme operates across all four school terms, with:

  • Junior Skills Factory – U14 players
  • Senior Skills Factory – U16 & U19 players

All sessions are aligned with CBA’s Style of Play (SOP) and Style of Coaching (SOC), creating a clear development pathway for players and coaches throughout Canterbury.

Why Skills Factory?

CBA has a strong foundation in teaching players what to do through our Style of Play. Skills Factory focuses on developing the how — the individual skills players need to execute those concepts consistently and under pressure.

The programme provides a high-repetition, high-support environment where players can develop their game under quality skills coaches.

Our goal is not to replace club, school or representative team training. Instead, Skills Factory provides players with additional individual development opportunities that complement their existing basketball.

2026 Programme

Skills Factory operates differently across the year to provide development opportunities that fit around the Canterbury basketball calendar.

Terms 1 & 4

Terms 1 and 4 provide both morning Senior Skills Factory sessions and an afternoon Junior Skills Factory session.

Senior Skills Factory – U16 & U19

Monday, Tuesday & Thursday
6:30am – 7:15am
Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre

Players can use the morning sessions to consistently build their individual skill base before school and alongside their other basketball commitments.

Junior Skills Factory – U14

Thursday
4:00pm – 5:15pm
Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre

Junior Skills Factory introduces younger players to high-quality skill development while building the technical foundations they will need as they progress through the CBA pathway.

Terms 2 & 3

During the main basketball season, Skills Factory moves to an after-school delivery model.

Senior Skills Factory – U16 & U19

Monday & Friday

  • 4:00pm – 5:15pm
  • 5:15pm – 6:30pm

Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre

Players are grouped according to age, gender and development needs to create appropriate training environments.

The Friday session has a particular focus on helping players transfer their skills into competition and prepare to perform in their weekend club games.

Junior Skills Factory – U14

Tuesday
4:00pm – 5:15pm
Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre

Junior sessions focus on developing strong individual foundations while introducing players to the concepts and decision-making that underpin CBA’s Style of Play.

Development Focus

Skills Factory is designed to bridge the gap between understanding basketball concepts and being able to execute them in games.

Players will develop areas including:

  • Shooting
  • Finishing
  • Footwork
  • Ball handling
  • 1v1 play
  • Creating and maintaining advantages
  • Decision-making under pressure
  • Playing with pace
  • Game-realistic skill execution

Rather than simply completing repetitive drills, players are challenged to apply skills in changing situations through constraint-led activities and game-realistic scenarios.

We aim for “repetition without repetition” — giving players lots of opportunities to practise important skills while continually requiring them to perceive, decide and adapt.

High-Quality Coaching

Skills Factory is delivered in partnership with Adam Morgan and Institute of Hoops.

Adam was named 2025 Coach of the Year and is regarded as one of New Zealand’s leading skills coaches. He works alongside CBA to design the Skills Factory curriculum and develop the coaches delivering within the programme.

This allows CBA to provide players with high-quality coaching while simultaneously developing more skilled coaches across the Canterbury basketball community.

Where appropriate, players train in small development groups, allowing coaches to provide individual feedback while maintaining the intensity and decision-making required for skills to transfer into games.

Developing Players and Coaches

Skills Factory isn’t only a player development programme — it is also an important part of CBA’s coach development pathway.

Coaches involved in Skills Factory have the opportunity to:

  • Develop under the guidance of Adam Morgan
  • Deliver within a consistent Skills Factory curriculum
  • Strengthen their understanding of CBA’s Style of Play
  • Develop their application of CBA’s Style of Coaching
  • Gain practical experience delivering high-quality skill development
  • Learn how to create engaging, game-realistic learning environments

By developing players and coaches together, Skills Factory helps improve the quality of basketball development available throughout the Canterbury region.

Who Is Skills Factory For?

Skills Factory is designed for players who want to improve and are prepared to train with intent.

Players do not need to be CBA representative players to participate. A central purpose of the programme is to make quality skills coaching accessible to players throughout our region, including players aspiring to progress into CBA representative and development programmes in the future.

Players should arrive ready to work, learn, compete and positively contribute to the training environment.

Registration

Registrations are offered separately for each term, allowing players and families to select the Skills Factory opportunities that work best alongside their school, club and representative commitments.

Spaces are limited to ensure we can maintain the quality of the training environment and coaching.
