The Phil Burns Cup was initially started by Cashmere High as trophy taken by the preseason tournament winner into the season. This was contested during regular season games, with the winner of the game vs the current holder taking it.

After a brief disappearance due to damage, the trophy has been reincorporated into the Whelan Division One competition from 2026.

The trophy started with Hillmorton as the team coached by Mr Phil Burns himself and has been contested throughout.

Current changes:

28th April 2026- St Maragret’s beat Hillmorton 74-51 to take the cup.

9th June 2026- Rangiora beat St Margaret’s 58-53 to take cup after 4 consecutive defenses.
