EOIs for 2025 coaching roles are open until November 21st.
Expressions of Interest (EOI) for those wanting to coach in Canterbury Basketball Association’s 2025 representative and development programmes are open.
All those wanting to be considered for head, assistant or apprentice roles should apply through this form.
Significant changes to the 2025 programmes include:
- Expansion of the U16 and U19 Mainlands programme to include programming in March post rep trials. This means coaches in mainlands will play a more significant role at rep trials and programming.
- Only 2 boys and 2 girls teams traveling to the U14 Regional Tournament in October due to tournament being moved from Ashburton to Invercargill.
Representative programmes are CBA teams that compete in the National Qualifying tournaments and/or their respective national tournaments:

We highly encourage all coaches, regardless of experience to coach as we have coach development programmes designed to support coaches in their develop throughout their journey.

Please note that opportunities for coaches to train and develop in reimbursed roles have been created in the:
- the rep-readiness camp January 22nd, 23rd, 24th 2025, and
- the Signature League in term 1 2025.
These roles support assistant coaches and apprentice coaches in funding their tournament costs.

Coaching Roles
Head Coach
- The head coach provides leadership and direction in line with the programmes values and SOP. They report directly to the Head of Pathways and oversee all aspects of the team and provide role clarity and foster the development of all players and assistant/apprentice coaches.

- All head coaches tournament costs are paid for by the CBA including a stipend for the national tournament.
The process
- Step 1: Register with BBNZ as a coach via The Huddle (Game Day) – http://bbnz.link/fwqnr.
Coaches will be required to renew their registration annually.
- Step 2: Complete the following three online learning modules via Sport Tutor.
Assistant Coach
- The assistant coach provides support to the head coach and players.
- They travel to all tournaments, however, pay their own costs to the national tournament unless they earn credit by acting as a head coach in the signature league and January rep readiness camp.
- This policy is put in place to ensure the costs to players stay low.

Apprentice Coach
- The apprentice coach provides support to the head coach, assistant coach in the capacity of a mentee, and acts as a second assistant coach to players.
- They travel to the qualifying tournament if they organize their own trip with other apprentice coaches (transport accommodation etc) local.
- They do not travel to national tournaments.
- They must act as a head or assistant coach in the mainlands programme to implement learnings from their role.
