The Referee Accelerator Programme (RAP) is open for registration.

A four-week training initiative to accelerate experienced young player’s refereeing abilities to enable them to referee U13-U17 community basketball grades) 

Target Audience: Young players with 0 – 2 years experience refereeing aiming to develop the capacity to referee U13, U15 and U17 club competitions. 

Duration: 4 Tuesdays starting Tuesday 25th Feb, 630-8pm at Shirley Avonside

Week 1 Tuesday February 25th: Introduction to Officiating at the Next Level 

630pm Shirley Avonside (*U18 Boys Signature League) 

Objective: Understand the expectations and key differences between primary school and club-level competitions, and the difference between community basketball refereeing and performance refereeing.  

  • Welcome & Overview 
  • Role of a Referee at U13/U15 Level 
  • Basic Officiating Mechanics (Lead & Trail Positions) 
  • Whistle Technique & Confidence Drills 
  • Q&A Session 

Practical Component: 

Live scrimmage for U18 Boys focused on: 

  • Floor positioning  
  • Whistle confidence and control  

 

Week 2: Game Management & Communication 

630pm Shirley Avonside (*U18 Boys Signature League) 

Objective: Build confidence in managing players, coaches, and game situations. 

  • Communication with Coaches & Players 
  • Dealing with Conflict & Game Control 
  • Common Player Behaviors at U13/U15 
  • Calling Fouls vs. Letting Play Flow 
  • Signals & Mechanics Review 

Practical Component: 

Live scrimmage focused on: 

  • Communication with coaches and players 
  • Whistle & voice projection exercises 

 

Week 3: Rules & Decision Making 

630pm Shirley Avonside (*U18 Boys Signature League) 

Objective: Develop rule knowledge and consistency in officiating. 

  • Key Rule Differences (Primary vs. Club) 
  • Traveling, Double Dribble & Carrying Violations 
  • Contact & Advantage/Disadvantage Principles 
  • Positioning for Better Calls 

Practical Component: 

Live scrimmage focused on:

  • Contact & Advantage/Disadvantage Principles 

 

Week 4: Refereeing Fast-Paced Games 

630pm Shirley Avonside (*U18 Boys Signature League) 

Objective: Improve positioning, anticipation, and fitness. 

  • Transition Officiating & Court Coverage 
  • Understanding Fast Breaks & Defensive Positioning 
  • Managing Physical Play in Club Games 

Practical Component: 

Live scrimmage focused on: 

  • Understanding Fast Breaks & Defensive Positioning
