Saturday Sport – Basketball and Netball

Christchurch Netball Centre (CNC), and the Canterbury Basketball Association (CBA) have been meeting to discuss ways to work together to minimise the chances of female athletes needing to choose between sports when they play both netball and basketball

The following principles have been agreed by both sports organisations to support this:

  • Basketball will use consistent timeslots for their competitions, so as to provide a level of certainty for players competing.
    • Women’s Premier (Saturday Mornings – no change from previous seasons).
    • French Cup (Saturday Afternoons – with an emphasis on starting games in the 4pm timeslot as often as possible, or 2:20pm if necessary).
    • Girls’ 16U (Saturday Mornings – with an emphasis on starting these games in the first timeslot of the day as often as possible, or the second one if necessary).
    • Girls’ 13U (Saturday Afternoons – with an emphasis on starting games in the 4pm timeslot as often as possible, or 2:20pm if necessary).

  • Netball
    • Christchurch Netball schedules games throughout the day on Saturdays to fit all competitions in and, where possible, will honour time requests for teams who also have basketball commitments.
    • Christchurch Netball’s Y7/8 competition will continue to be scheduled in the first two rounds of the morning (no change).

For Club Players, This Means That:

  • Senior Players – no change from previous years.
  • Y7/8 and 13U Players – both sports’ schedules will allow players to compete in the two sports without needing any special requests.
  • Y9+ and up to 23U Players – Christchurch Netball will consider known basketball competition times and, where possible, will honour time requests to help minimise clashes.

For Representative Players, This Means That:

  • There is no weekly competition games run on Sundays now, so the CNC and the CBA will ensure that representative practices are scheduled in opposite parts of the day, to ensure there are no clashes.
  • The dates advised for Representative Tournaments (National, or Regional Qualifying) do not clash between the two sports.

As these changes take place, we welcome feedback, via either your club or school, so that we can accommodate as many requests as possible.
