50 Teams kick off their Mainlands experience tomorrow as coaches, players and referees look to develop (and winning never hurts).
The 2024 installment of the Mainlands Competition is here.
This year it has grown to include associations South Island wide, welcoming a total of 50 teams across the U16 and U19 age groups.
All games are being played at Selwyn Sports Centre, with firsts games taking place 9am on Saturday (13th July), through until finals on Monday (15th July) at 3.00pm. This year sees us utilizing 7 courts each day.
While our teams all love to win, the key focus of Mainlands is to develop players and coaches.
The full draw can be found here: https://canterbury.basketball/competitions/tournament-draws/
CBA have a huge 14 teams in this competition, consisting of the following:
2 x U16 Girls (Black and Red)
6 x U16 Boys (Red, Black, White, Grey, Orange and Green)
1 x U19 Women’s team
5 x U19 Men’s teams (Red, Black, White, Grey and Orange)
The exciting growth of this program for CBA has allowed us to have Maia Williamson take a lead coach developer role for the female side, while Ben Constable focuses on the 11 male teams.
The girl’s teams play a full round robin of 4-5 games followed by placing games with 1st in each pool playing, 2nd in each pool etc.
The women play a single round robin day one, followed by semis and finals on day two, and a possible friendly day three.
The men and boys both start in pools of three playing a round robin, before splitting into top 8 and then bottom 4 for the men and a middle 8 and bottom 7 for the boys. The bottom four play a round robin, while the groups of 8 (and 7) have a quarter final, semi-final and final structure.
Food vendors will be on site including a coffee van all three days, a hot chips van Saturday and Monday, while Selwyn Hawks run a sausage sizzle on the Sunday.
We look forward to seeing supporters Canterbury wide as our teams look to develop, alongside coaches and referees.
