McDs Week Five Recap

We’re now officially past the halfway mark in the regular season, with playoff spots now the focus for all of our teams

In the McDonald’s Whelan Trophy Competition, Middleton Grange hosted Cashmere and had a monster 36 points game from Katie Jo van den Bogaert, as well as 20 from Annabel Lapworth. Samantha Irvine (13p) and Rachel Pullan (16p) were both back from the BBNZ U19 tournament, but not able to help their Cashmere team to a win, dropping the game 84-54.

Lincoln continued their improved showing in the Whelan Trophy Competition, winning 73-55 over newcomers Marian College. Kate Herman had 21 points, while 13 was the number for both Sophie Withell and Samantha McCrone. For Marian, Hannah Malaysay and Mckenzie Hansen both had 14, and Brie-Ellen Harding scored 10.

Middleton Grange faced Cashmere in the Thomson Trophy Competition too, and kept things interesting throughout the game, but were unable to get closer than nine points away in the final quarter, going down 83-68. Thomas Webley led Cashmere with 28, and fellow starters Nic Wenmoth and Tom Russ-Hofmans scored 12 and 11 respectively. Ben Carlile-Smith had 25 for the Gators, and had 11 points each from Jed Rea and Ah-Li Fenika.

Week six is officially an empty week in the Whelan Competition, but we have a few deferred games to include here. Cashmere may have the Dowson Cup up for grabs twice, first against Christ’s College in a rematch of last year’s final on Tuesday night, then again on Thursday against a sneaky-good St. Andrew’s team. Our game of the week is picked to be Middleton Grange at Christchurch Boys’ High on Tuesday night
