2025 Major Award Winners

Canterbury Basketball’s major award recipients from the 2025 season were announced during our Finals Week – here’s a brief rundown of what each winner has been recognised for

2025 Services to Basketball: Dave Langrell

Dave Langrell’s impact on basketball in Canterbury extends far beyond the scoreboard. Over many years, he has given tirelessly to growing the game, developing not only players but also coaches, referees, and entire programmes that have become staples in the CBA community.

His leadership of the Hillmorton and Horomaka basketball programmes has provided hundreds of young athletes with opportunities to play, learn, and grow in a supportive environment. Under his guidance, these programmes have flourished, producing competitive teams year after year and becoming a central part of our local basketball culture.

Dave has been instrumental in developing scores of referees, ensuring that the next generation of officials is well-trained, confident, and passionate about the game. He has also mentored many young coaches, sharing his vast knowledge and instilling in them the values of preparation, teamwork, and commitment.

On the court, his achievements speak for themselves. In 2025, he led his Canterbury U16 Boys team to another national championship title—one of the most thrilling finals in memory—adding yet another chapter to his long list of competitive successes.

We are proud to present Dave Langrell with the “2025 Services to Basketball” award in recognition of his exceptional and lasting contributions to the game in Canterbury

2025 Coach of the Year: Adam Morgan

Adam Morgan has firmly established himself as one of Canterbury’s most dedicated and successful basketball coaches, guiding teams to excellence, while developing players who thrive both on and off the court.

In 2025, Adam’s standout achievement came with his leadership of the St. Andrew’s College Senior A Girls, steering them to an undefeated Whelan Trophy Season, through a combination of tactical skill, relentless preparation, and calm under pressure. His teams play with discipline, creativity, and an unshakable sense of belief—a reflection of their coach’s approach.

Beyond results, Adam is a tireless builder of people and programmes. He invests countless hours in individual player development, tailoring his coaching to help athletes reach their full potential. His ability to inspire, teach, and connect has left a lasting mark on the many players who have passed through his teams.

Adam’s impact stretches across multiple levels of the game, from grassroots competitions to national tournaments. Whether it’s designing a game plan for a high-stakes final or running drills at a midweek training session, he brings the same passion and attention to detail.

For his outstanding leadership, competitive success, and deep commitment to developing our basketball community, we are proud to name Adam Morgan as the 2025 “Coach of the Year”

2025 Administrators of the Year: Scott and Ritchie Howell

The two brothers share the administration duties for the Atami-Kahu club, with Scott also fulfilling the “Teacher in Charge of Basketball” at Shirley Boys’ High School. They are both excellent in regards to their communication, always ensuring they have the correct information for the club members, and following up on any mistakes and issues with their teams promptly.

The Atami-Kahu Club is one of the clubs who are very pro-active in regards to applying for funding, and keeping us up to date with the progress on this front. They also do a great job ensuring all of the members of their club have registered, and have been assigned into the correct team.

Ritchie and Scott, the work you do to help basketball run smoothly for all your club members is why we are happy to award you both with our 2025 “Administrator of the Year” Award

2025 Club of the Year: Selwyn Hawks Basketball Club

The Selwyn Hawks Basketball Club has grown again in 2025, up to 19 affiliated teams in our competitions (this is over double what they had in 2019), with all junior grades entered by at least one Hawks’ Team, and a Men’s Division I team joining their three Men’s 20 and Under teams.

The Selwyn Hawks branding continues to be easily recognisable, and helps to foster the sense of belonging and inclusion amongst all its members. The Club continues to run junior basketball in the Selwyn District – including competitions for kids in Y3/4, Y5/6 and Y7/8, and delivering After School Hoops in three separate venues.

The club has worked hard to deliver other aspects needed for the growth of basketball, with coaches taking Girls’ Got Game sessions, and Sophie Currie leading the development of their referees.

We are pleased to publicly applaud the work the Selwyn Hawks Club has done, and award them as our 2025 “Club of the Year”
