COVID-19 Statement #6

With the announcement that we are moving to Level Two this week, Clive Beaumont is updating you on our target starting date for competition

Our sixth official statement has just been sent to all clubs and schools from our General Manager, Clive Beaumont (11 May 2020). If you still need to register you can do this here.

Welcome to our further update around Basketball in the light of the COVID-19 restrictions.

At 4pm the Prime Minister announced that New Zealand will move to Alert Level 2 from Thursday 14th May.

Following the guidance issued last week, this means that we can now start planning our season in earnest. (Sport NZ’s Guidelines can be seen here).

CBA Staff have, over the last few days, put together draft protocols which we are currently discussing with the Council and other venue providers, around the hygiene methods, for people and equipment, together with the contact tracing methods we will have to put into operation. Further details will be sent to Clubs in the next couple of days.

We will also be consulting clubs as to the length and format of the season.

At this stage, subject to agreement with Court providers, we intend to commence the season on 6th June 2020 (the midweek league will restart on 3rd June), so we hope clubs will now prepare to meet this date.

Without doubt our main concern remains the welfare of our community and I ask at this stage that when we issue our protocols and contact tracing methods, they are received positively by all. We all want to play the game we love – the only question now is, can we play it safely and adhere to regulations put in place by the Government. If we can, we play – if not then play will be shut down again.

Look out for further details in the next few days and we look forward to seeing everyone on court at the beginning of June.

Ngā Mihi and Kind Regards,

Clive Beaumont
GM – Canterbury Basketball
