Day One of the SI Junior HS Tournament is now in the books, with 47 games at Parakiore all completed
A record sixty-one teams (for a South Island Y9/10 basketball tournament) made their way to Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre to compete in the second iteration of this tournament, after BBNZ’s withdrawal from being involved in late 2024. This is an increase in entries, on both the 2025 tournament (52 teams competed in Nelson), and the 2024 tournament (55 teams competed in Dunedin).
Jon Derry – the Regional Sport Director for School Sport Canterbury (who is also a member of the Steering Group that has worked to be able to host this tournament each year) shared his thoughts:
“It’s genuinely exciting to see our junior basketballs turning up to this world class facility, some for the first time, so pumped for the opportunity to represent their school, and play in this great competition!”

Day Two’s Draw has 49 games scheduled, where we’ll see the conclusion of pool play for both the Boys’ A and Girls’ A grades, as well as the Girls’ B grade competitions.
