There’s a few things which we want our 13U Club Basketball teams to know before their first game
Duty – All 13U teams supply two people each for duty on their own game. The different roles on scorebench can all be seen here on our website. If someone is needed to help referee (i.e. there are not two appointed referees on a game) the first named team on the draw supplies this
Playing Time – Games usually take 70-85 minutes to play (four x 10 minute, stop clock quarters). To encourage development, and a love of basketball, each player should get roughly equal time in the first three quarters, with the fourth quarter (and overtime if necessary) where the coach may allocate more time to his/her stronger players
Etiquette – what is likely the first time for a lot of these players means you will probably have to explain some things about etiquette (the underlying reason is we want everyone to enjoy playing for as long as possible!) We give some examples in regards to etiquette on our website too
Retreat Rule – if a team is up by 30+ points, they need to retreat to half-way when on defence. The full retreat rule can be read here
Referees – we often have our newest referees on these games, so there is a Zero-Tolerance Policy in place to help support them as they develop. Parents and players will follow a coach’s lead in terms of what they perceive as being acceptable (or unacceptable) behaviour
