Canterbury Basketball Wraps Historic Rep Season with Four National Titles

Depth shown in B teams and Mainlands squads

It’s been a season to remember for Canterbury Basketball Association (CBA).

Across the six major national tournaments—U16, U18, and U20 boys/girls Footlocker Championships—Canterbury teams won four of the six national titles, and added a silver and a bronze to cap off a dominant year. Beyond the podium, every single B team not only qualified for Nationals but also pushed deep into the competition, and our Mainlands squads were packed with talent that could’ve held their own on the national stage.

This kind of success doesn’t happen by accident.

Our rep programme continues to thrive because it’s built on the most vibrant and cohesive basketball community in the country. From coaches to parents, players to volunteers, we support each other, challenge each other, and are all committed to a shared goal—developing people and performance in the red and black. That culture of unity, competition, and care is our biggest strength.

U16 Nationals

At the U16 Nationals in Wellington, both the A Boys and A Girls teams reached their respective national finals, with both the Girls and Boys emerging victorious. The B Boys pushed through to the top eight and were widely praised for their grit and improvement, while the B Girls capped off a strong week with a gutsy 11th-place finish.

U18 Nationals

Back home in Christchurch, the U18 tournament showcased the depth of Canterbury’s talent. All four teams (A and B Boys, A and B Girls) qualified and competed with distinction, with the A teams pushing for medals and the B teams upsetting higher seeds throughout pool play. The U18 Boys A team entered as top seed and delivered on expectations, bringing home the national championship.

U20 Nationals

The defending champion U20 Men and Women returned to the top of the mountain again in Tauranga. Both squads went undefeated in pool play, with the men continuing that form to a gold and the women a bronze.

What’s Next? Keep the Momentum Going

Rather than rest on what we’ve achieved, it’s time to keep that next play mentality—the same one that got us here and will serve us even better moving forward.

To help us continue building the best basketball community in New Zealand, CBA is rolling out a new U14 Coach Development Programme to recruit and develop coaches in the first 0-2 years of coaching! We’d encourage everyone who is early in their coaching journey or considering coaching to apply.

Again, thank you to everyone—players, coaches, parents, supporters, and volunteers—for your part in another incredible year.

Let’s keep welcoming people into our community, supporting and challenging each other, and making Canterbury basketball even stronger.

Final thank you!

If there was any doubt of how unique the depth and commitment in our community is, we’d like to thank all those involved, in the programme!
