High School Finals Basketball is here!
What a crazy season this has been with the addition of Grocott division two, 10 teams back in Whelan division one for the first time since 2021.
Not only is this the first time we have three consecutive games on both finals’ nights, it’s also the first time in any division that the schools in Thomson and Whelan finals are the same schools. Could history be made with the first time a school holds both championships at the same time too?
Now what really matters is who is playing and when. All games are being played at Cowles Stadium.
Monday 24th August
4.00pm-Division Two Grocott
The first ever Grocott Division Two final sees Christchurch Boys High take on Kaiapoi High. Both teams have proven competitive this season with the establishment of Division two. Kaiapoi’s only losses in the grade against their final’s opponents, while CBSH have remained undefeated after the division splits.
5.45pm- Division Two Whelan
Ashburton return to the division two final after a spell in the division one competition last season, while Middleton are in the finals for a second consecutive year. It currently sits one a piece with wins in their regular season matchups. Meaning this game could go either way.

7.30pm- Division Two Thomson
Papanui have fought hard this season to make the finals after falling just short last season. They guaranteed their spot by finishing first in regular season, while Cathedral kept their winning ways. Both teams also sit with a win each in the regular season matchups.

Tuesday 25th August
4.00pm- Division One Grocott
It’s a repeat of last season’s final, although Hillmorton are the team coming in unbeaten throughout the season in both club and school. Hillmorton will be looking to replicate the Spartans 2025 perfect season with a Grocott final win.

5.45pm- Division One Whelan
It is the first part of our historic night with St Andrew’s (no stranger to the finals) taking on Cashmere who have fought their way all season. If St Andrew’s get the win, it will be their seventh consecutive championship title.

7.30pm- Division One Thomson
Our second half of history see’s St Andrew’s taking on Cashmere in Thomson. St Andrew’s battled it out with last year’s finalist’s (Christ’s College) in a thrilling OT performance to make their way into the finals.
