Canterbury Basketball has opened expressions of interest for referees and referee trainers for Signature League, Term 1 in 2024.

Referees can register as either;

  1. A referee transitioning from primary school competitions into CBA junior competitions for the JRD (Junior Referee Development Programme),
  2. Established CBA referee aiming to prepare for the season and/or join the programme to prepare for qualifying and national rep tournaments, OR
  3. Referee Trainers, to provide development to referees over the course of 5-weeks.

1. Signature League JRD

This five-week programme running in parallel to the Term One 2024 Signature League gives junior referees the chance to meet and connect with their peers also transitioning to CBA club basketball whilst gaining training and hands on experience refereeing a higher level.

To be a part of the Signature League Junior Referee Development program you must.

  • Be at High School in 2024
  • Have refereed Year 5-8 competitions for their club at least for two terms
  • Be considered at least a Level B referee as per the Referee-Development-Pathway. (If unsure, contact your respective club officer).

The Junior Referee Development will look like this:

  • Food available
  • Discussion around a point of emphasis each week
  • Practicing on the courts with established referees

2. High Performance Referee Programme

The Signature League will provide the following opportunities for established referees and trainers entering 2024:

  • Pre-season preparation and development
  • A pre-requisite to be selected for BBNZ tournaments
  • Training from senior referees/referee coaches
  • Providing the opportunity to develop JRD officials
  • A small koha for games refereed
  • This is also for referees coming to Christchurch in 2024

To be a part of the Established Referee Programme for the Signature League you must:

This is also an opportunity for some of our senior referees and or our BBNZ accredited trainers to:

  • Offer development and training for referees
  • Focus on point(s) of emphasis each week
  • (If required), be prepared to step into help referee a game as the “senior” referee

Signature League Details

When is Signature League happening in Term 1?

  • Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Cowles from 6pm each night. The JRD will run from 6pm-8pm on Thursday nights and games (registrations pending) will operate at 630pm and 8pm
  • Weeks starting January 29, through to February 26
